    Brendan's Forgotten Birthday

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Brendan worked at a taxi rank every day. He got up early and started work at six o'clock in the morning. He stood near the taxis and helped people find their cars. Today was a special day. It was Brendan's birthday. He was thirty years old. He woke up happy and smiled at himself in the mirror. He waited for a message from his family. No message came. He checked his phone again. It was still quiet. He ate his breakfast alone. Then he put on his jacket and walked to work. The sun was shining, but Brendan felt a little sad. He thought, "Maybe they will remember later." Brendan arrived at the taxi rank and started his job.

He helped an old woman find her taxi. He opened the door for her and smiled. "Good morning," he said. She smiled back at him. Then a family arrived with big bags. Brendan helped them too. He lifted their bags and put them in the car. The driver said, "Thank you, Brendan." But nobody said happy birthday. Brendan looked at his phone again. Still nothing. He drank a cup of tea and sat down on a small bench. He watched the taxis come and go. He felt lonely. He thought about his friends and his family. He wondered why they all forgot. At the end of the day, Brendan was tired and sad.

He picked up his bag to go home. Then he heard a loud noise behind him. He turned around and saw all his friends and his family. They shouted, "Surprise! Happy birthday, Brendan!" His sister was holding a big cake. His friends were laughing and clapping. Brendan's eyes went wide. He could not speak for a moment. Then he started to laugh too. "You all remembered!" he said. His mother hugged him. "We never forgot," she said. "We planned this all day!" Brendan felt very happy. It was the best birthday he ever had. He smiled and said, "Thank you. This is the best surprise ever!"

    The Birthday Nobody Remembered

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Brendan had worked at the taxi rank for nearly six years, and he knew almost every driver, every bench, and every crack in the pavement by heart. On the morning of his thirtieth birthday, he arrived at work feeling quietly hopeful, expecting at least a message or two on his phone. He checked it twice before nine o'clock, but the screen showed nothing beyond the usual notifications. As the morning wore on, he greeted passengers with his usual warmth, helped a nervous elderly man into a cab, and directed a young couple toward the correct queue. All the while, a small, uncomfortable feeling was growing in his chest. By lunchtime, not one person had mentioned his birthday, and even his closest friend at work had walked straight past him without a word. Brendan sat down on the bench near the main shelter, wrapped both hands around a cup of tea, and stared quietly at the line of waiting taxis. He told himself it did not matter, but it did.

The afternoon passed slowly, with Brendan going through the motions of his job while trying not to think too much. He answered questions from passengers, signaled drivers forward when a space became free, and even managed to laugh at a joke one of the older drivers told. But each time his phone buzzed, his heart lifted briefly, only to fall again when he saw it was nothing important. He had not expected a big celebration, but a simple message would have meant a great deal. As the sky began to darken and the evening crowd started to thin, Brendan gathered his things and accepted, with some disappointment, that the day was nearly over. Just as he reached the edge of the rank and was about to leave, a sudden burst of noise made him spin around. Standing in a loose circle around the waiting area were his friends, his sister, and his mother, all grinning widely and holding a large, candle-covered cake. "Surprise!

Happy birthday, Brendan!" they called out, their voices overlapping with laughter. He stood completely still for a few seconds, his mouth open and his eyes bright with disbelief. "You were all in on it?" he asked, looking from face to face. His mother stepped forward and pulled him into a hug. "We have been planning this since last week," she said. "Did you really think we had forgotten?" Brendan laughed and shook his head, feeling warmth replace every trace of the sadness he had carried all day.
