    Blessing's Lucky Day

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Blessing walked into the town hall waiting room. It was a big, quiet room. There were many chairs in rows. Blessing looked around and felt nervous. She had an important meeting that day. She needed to fix a problem with her documents. She did not know how long it would take. She took a number from the machine near the door. Her number was 47. She looked at the screen on the wall. The screen showed number 12. Blessing sat down slowly. She thought, "This will take a very long time." She put her bag on the chair next to her. She took out a book to read. Blessing started to read her book. The room was not very busy.

A few other people sat quietly in their chairs. A kind woman sat down next to Blessing. The woman smiled at her. "Is this your first time here?" the woman asked. "Yes," said Blessing. "I am a little worried." The woman laughed softly. "Don't worry," she said. "The staff here are very helpful." Blessing felt a little better after that. She looked at the screen again. The number changed quickly. It showed number 30 now. Blessing was surprised. "That was fast!" she said to herself. She sat up straight and put her book away. A few minutes later, the screen showed number 47. Blessing stood up quickly.

She walked to the desk. A man with a friendly face greeted her. "Hello! How can I help you today?" he said. Blessing explained her problem. The man listened carefully. He typed something on his computer. "Good news," he said with a smile. "We can fix this today. It will only take ten minutes." Blessing could not believe it. She thought it would take all day. She felt very happy and relieved. The man helped her with everything. Blessing thanked him many times. She walked out of the town hall with a big smile. It was a much better day than she expected.

    Better Than Expected

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Blessing pushed open the heavy door of the town hall and stepped into the waiting room, immediately struck by the long rows of plastic chairs that stretched almost to the far wall. She had been putting off this visit for weeks, dreading the thought of spending an entire afternoon dealing with a complicated issue involving her personal records. After taking a numbered ticket from the dispenser by the entrance, she glanced at the display screen and felt her heart sink a little — her number was 47, and the screen was currently showing 12. She found an empty seat near the window, settled her bag on her lap, and tried to prepare herself for what she assumed would be a long and frustrating wait. A few other people sat nearby, scrolling through their phones or staring blankly at the walls, and the low hum of an air-conditioning unit was the only sound in the room. Blessing took a slow breath, reminded herself that she had no choice but to be patient, and reached into her bag for the novel she had brought along for exactly this kind of situation.

She had barely finished the first chapter when she noticed the display numbers advancing at a surprisingly steady pace. Within twenty minutes, the screen had already reached number 31, and Blessing found herself sitting forward in her chair with a growing sense of cautious optimism. The woman seated beside her leaned over and said, "They have a new system now — apparently it is much faster than before." Blessing smiled and replied, "I honestly wasn't expecting that. I thought I'd be here until closing time." The two of them chatted quietly for a while, and Blessing discovered that the woman had visited several times before and always found the staff to be patient and thorough. By the time their conversation came to a natural pause, the number on the screen had jumped to 44, and Blessing tucked her book away and gathered her documents. When number 47 was finally called, Blessing approached the desk with a cautious smile, still half-expecting some kind of complication or delay.

The officer greeted her warmly and listened attentively as she explained the issue with her records, asking a few clarifying questions before turning to his computer with a calm, unhurried manner. "I can see what has happened here," he said, nodding reassuringly. "This is actually a straightforward correction, and I can process it right now." Blessing stared at him for a moment, barely able to conceal her disbelief, having braced herself for the possibility of multiple return visits and a great deal of additional paperwork. Within a matter of minutes, the correction had been made, a confirmation document had been printed, and the officer was wishing her a pleasant afternoon. Blessing walked back through the waiting room feeling lighter than she had in weeks, marvelling at how thoroughly the experience had defied her expectations.
