Andre Gets News of a Delayed Flight in the Kitchen

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Andre works in a restaurant kitchen. He is a cook. He loves his job. Every day he prepares food for many people. He arrives early and starts work before the restaurant opens. The kitchen is busy and loud. There are pots, pans, and knives everywhere. Andre knows where everything is. He is good at his job and his colleagues like him. Today is a special day for Andre. He is going on a trip after work. His bag is already packed. He put it in the back room before his shift started. He is excited and happy. He checks his phone quickly between tasks. Andre gets a message on his phone. It is from the airline. The message says his flight is delayed.

He reads it again. The flight is delayed by four hours. Andre feels disappointed. He shows the message to his colleague, Marta. "My flight is delayed," he says. "That is too bad," says Marta. "What will you do?" Andre thinks for a moment. "I will stay and help here," he says. "I have time now." The head chef, Mr. Kim, hears this. "Are you sure?" he asks. "Yes," says Andre. "I do not want to sit at the airport for four hours." Mr. Kim smiles. "Good," he says. "We need help tonight." Andre puts on his apron again and gets back to work. He chops vegetables and stirs sauces.

He helps Marta with a big order. The kitchen is very busy. Time passes quickly when there is a lot to do. At nine o'clock, Andre checks his phone again. The flight is now on time. "My flight is ready," he tells Mr. Kim. "Go," says Mr. Kim. "And thank you for staying." Andre takes off his apron and picks up his bag. Marta waves goodbye. "Have a good trip!" she says. Andre smiles. "Thank you," he says. He walks out of the kitchen and feels happy. The delay was not so bad after all.

Andre's Delayed Flight and an Unexpected Extra Shift

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Andre is a cook at a busy restaurant, and he takes real pride in his work. He arrived early that morning, slipped his packed travel bag into the back room, and tied on his apron with the quiet confidence of someone who knows exactly what they are doing. The kitchen hummed with the familiar sounds of sizzling pans, shouted orders, and the sharp rhythm of knives on chopping boards. Andre moved through it all with ease, preparing sauces and plating dishes while quietly looking forward to the trip he had planned for weeks. Everything felt perfectly organized until his phone vibrated on the shelf beside the spice rack. The notification was from the airline: his flight had been delayed by four hours. Andre read the message twice, feeling the familiar sting of disappointment settle in his chest. He stepped over to his colleague Marta and showed her the screen. "That's really frustrating," she said, glancing at the message.

"What are you going to do?" Andre looked around the kitchen, which was already filling up with the dinner rush, and made a quick decision. "I'll stay and help out here," he told her. "Sitting in the departure lounge for four hours sounds awful." The head chef, Mr. Kim, had overheard the conversation and walked over. "Are you absolutely sure about that?" he asked. "Completely," said Andre, already reaching for his apron. With his travel plans temporarily on hold, Andre threw himself into the evening service with fresh energy. He took on extra prep work, helped Marta manage a complicated set of orders, and kept the kitchen moving at a steady pace. Time seemed to shrink when there was real work to focus on, and before he realized it, the clock showed nine.

His phone lit up with another airline notification: the flight was now departing on schedule. "I have to head out, Mr. Kim," he said, untying his apron. Mr. Kim gave a firm nod. "You did good work tonight. Safe travels." Marta called after him as he grabbed his bag. "Have a great trip, Andre!" He smiled, pushed open the kitchen door, and stepped out into the night feeling unexpectedly grateful for the delay.
