    Amara Makes a New Friend

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Amara walked into the warm-up room. It was a big room with mirrors on the walls. There were many dancers inside. Amara did not know anyone. She felt a little nervous. She looked around the room. She saw a girl standing near the window. The girl had a friendly smile. Amara wanted to talk to her. She took a deep breath. Then she walked over slowly. "Hello," said Amara. "My name is Amara." The girl looked at her and smiled. "Hi! My name is Lena," she said.

Lena was stretching her arms and legs. "Is this your first time here?" she asked. "Yes," said Amara. "I am new." Lena nodded. "I was new here too, last month," she said. "Do not worry. Everyone is very nice." Amara felt happy to hear that. She put down her bag. She started to stretch next to Lena. "What kind of dance do you do?" asked Amara. "I do ballet," said Lena. "And you?" "I do hip-hop," said Amara. They both laughed. "That is so cool!" said Lena. The two girls talked and stretched together.

The warm-up room felt less scary now. Soon, the warm-up time was almost finished. Amara felt much better. She was not nervous anymore. She looked at Lena and smiled. "Thank you for talking to me," she said. "Of course!" said Lena. "It is always good to meet new people." They picked up their bags. They walked to the door together. "See you next time?" asked Lena. A Friend in the Warm-Up Room

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

When Amara stepped into the warm-up room for the first time, she was immediately struck by how busy it was. Dancers of all styles filled the mirrored space, stretching, chatting, and moving with an ease that made her feel like an outsider. She hovered near the doorway for a moment, unsure where to go, then spotted a girl sitting alone against the far wall, quietly working through a series of slow leg stretches. Something about the girl's calm, focused expression made Amara feel less intimidated. She picked up her bag, crossed the room, and introduced herself. "Hi, I'm Amara. I hope I'm not interrupting," she said. The girl looked up and shook her head with a warm smile.

"Not at all! I'm Lena. Come and stretch over here." As they stretched side by side, Amara and Lena began to talk easily, the way people sometimes do when they share a common space and a common nerves. Lena had been coming to the studio for just over a month and still remembered how overwhelming those first few sessions had felt. "It gets easier, I promise," she said, glancing at Amara with an encouraging look. "Once you know a few faces, it starts to feel like your own space." Amara asked what style of dance Lena practiced, and was surprised to learn it was ballet, so different from her own background in hip-hop. They laughed at the contrast, swapping stories about their training and their favorite moves.

By the time the warm-up music began to play softly through the speakers, neither of them was thinking about nerves anymore. When the session was nearly over, Amara realized she had been so caught up in conversation that she had completely forgotten to feel anxious. She rolled up her mat and looked across at Lena, feeling a quiet gratitude she hadn't expected. "I'm really glad I came over and said hello," she admitted. Lena smiled and replied, "So am I. It's always the small moments that turn into something bigger." They walked out together, agreeing to arrive at the same time the following week. As Amara pushed open the door to the main studio, she felt a new sense of confidence settle around her. Making a connection had been as simple as choosing not to stand still.
