Amara and the Mix-Up at the Café

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Amara goes to a small café near her home every morning. She likes the café because it is quiet and warm. She always sits at the same table by the window. One morning, Amara arrives at the café and sees a man sitting at her favorite table. She does not know the man. She thinks he is a stranger. Amara walks to the table and puts her bag on the chair next to him. She smiles and says, "Excuse me, I think you are sitting at my table." The man looks up at her. He looks surprised. He says, "I am sorry, but I do not think this is your table." Amara feels a little embarrassed. She says, "I sit here every day." The man smiles and says, "I am new here. I did not know." Amara feels better. She smiles back at him.

The man tells Amara his name. He says, "My name is Leo. I just moved to this street." Amara is happy to hear this. She says, "Oh! You are my new neighbor!" Leo laughs and says, "Yes, I think I am!" They both laugh together. Amara sits down at the table with Leo. She asks him, "Do you like coffee?" Leo says, "Yes, I love coffee." Amara calls the waiter and orders two cups of coffee. The waiter brings the coffee quickly. Leo looks around the café and says, "This is a very nice place." Amara nods and says, "I come here every day. It is my favorite place." Leo says, "I can see why. It is very cozy." Amara is very happy. She is glad she spoke to Leo. Amara and Leo drink their coffee and talk for a long time.

Leo tells Amara that he works from home. Amara tells Leo that she works at a bookshop nearby. Leo says, "That sounds like a lovely job." Amara smiles and says, "I love it. I read books every day." They finish their coffee and stand up. Amara says, "It was really nice to meet you, Leo." Leo says, "It was nice to meet you too, Amara." He puts on his coat. Amara picks up her bag. They walk to the door of the café together. Leo says, "Maybe I will see you here tomorrow." Amara laughs and says, "Yes! And I will get here first so I can sit at my table!" Leo laughs too. They say goodbye and walk out of the café. Amara feels very happy. A small mix-up helped her make a new friend.

    Amara and the Misunderstanding

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Every morning without fail, Amara would settle into her favorite window seat at the small café on her street, order a flat white, and spend an hour reading before her working day began. One particular morning, however, she arrived to find an unfamiliar man already seated at her table, looking perfectly at home. Slightly irritated but determined to be polite, she approached him and said, "Excuse me, I believe that is actually my usual table." The man looked up with a mildly puzzled expression and replied, "I am not sure what you mean. This is just an empty table I chose when I came in." Amara felt a flush of embarrassment rise in her cheeks, because she realized immediately that she had no real claim over the seat. She recovered quickly, offered a small smile, and said, "You are right, of course. I apologize.

I suppose I have just sat there so many times that I started to think of it as mine." The man's expression softened and he introduced himself as Leo, explaining that he had only recently moved into the building at the end of her street. Amara's embarrassment gave way to genuine surprise, and she said, "You must be my new neighbor! I had heard someone was moving in but I had not had the chance to say hello." Leo laughed warmly and gestured to the seat across from him, saying, "Well, since the table is clearly yours, why don't you sit down and we can share it properly?" They ordered coffee together, and conversation came naturally between them. Leo mentioned that he worked as a translator from home, while Amara told him that she managed a small bookshop just a short walk away. "That must be a wonderful job," Leo said thoughtfully.

"Being surrounded by books all day sounds like something I would enjoy enormously." By the time their cups were empty, nearly an hour had passed and neither of them had noticed. Amara reflected on how an awkward beginning had turned into one of the most enjoyable mornings she could remember in a long time. As they gathered their things to leave, Leo held the café door open and said, "I imagine you will be back at your table tomorrow morning." Amara laughed and replied, "Absolutely, and I will be here earlier this time to make sure of it." Leo smiled and said, "Then perhaps I will join you, if that is all right." Amara nodded and said, "I would like that very much." They said goodbye on the pavement outside, and Amara walked towards her bookshop feeling glad that a small misunderstanding had been the beginning of what felt like a genuine friendship.
