A Surprise at the Petrol Station

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Yusuf worked at a petrol station. He started his job three months ago. Every day, he helped customers fill their cars with petrol. He also cleaned the windows and checked the oil. Yusuf always smiled at the customers. He said hello to every person. He tried to be polite and kind. Some customers were friendly. Other customers were quiet and busy. Yusuf did not mind. He liked his simple job. He worked hard every day. He wanted to do a good job. His manager was a tall woman called Mrs. Lin. She was usually quiet and serious. One Tuesday morning, Yusuf was cleaning the petrol pumps.

A car arrived and a man got out. Yusuf walked over to help him. "Good morning! How can I help you?" he asked. The man looked at Yusuf and smiled. "Are you Yusuf?" the man asked. Yusuf was surprised. He did not know this man. "Yes, I am Yusuf," he said. The man said, "I come here every week. You always help me. I wrote a message to your manager about you." Yusuf did not understand. He felt a little worried. "Was there a problem?" he asked. The man laughed. "No! I told her you are the best worker here." Yusuf's eyes opened wide.

He did not expect this. Later that day, Mrs. Lin called Yusuf into the small office. Yusuf walked in slowly. He was still a little nervous. "Yusuf, sit down please," she said. He sat down on the chair. "I received a message from a customer," Mrs. Lin said. Yusuf waited quietly. "The customer said very nice things about you." Yusuf smiled. He felt happy and proud. "You are doing a great job, Yusuf," she said. "Thank you for your hard work." Yusuf thanked her and walked back outside. He felt different now. He knew that small actions can mean a lot to other people. He continued his work with an even bigger smile.

    Feedback from a Stranger

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Yusuf had been working at the petrol station for just over six months, and he had settled into a comfortable routine. Each morning, he would arrive early, put on his uniform, and prepare the pumps before the first customers pulled in. He took pride in being helpful, whether he was assisting someone with directions, topping up their fuel, or simply offering a friendly greeting. His colleagues often teased him for being too cheerful, but Yusuf believed that a positive attitude made the long shifts easier to bear. His supervisor, Mr. Hasan, rarely gave feedback of any kind, so Yusuf never really knew how well he was performing. He simply kept doing his best and hoped that no news was good news. Still, there were moments when he wondered if anyone truly noticed his efforts.

One afternoon, while Yusuf was restocking the shelves inside the station's small shop, a woman he had never met before approached the counter. She introduced herself as someone who had been conducting a review of customer service at several businesses in the area. "I have been observing how staff interact with customers here for the past two weeks," she explained, "and I wanted to share my findings with you directly." Yusuf felt his stomach tighten because he assumed something had gone wrong. However, the woman smiled warmly and told him that his manner with customers had been outstanding. She mentioned specific moments she had witnessed, including a time when Yusuf had helped an elderly man carry bags to his car in the rain. "You went beyond what was required, and that left a strong impression on me," she said. By the following week, Mr. Hasan had received the full written report and called Yusuf into the back office to discuss it.

Yusuf had been feeling anxious ever since the woman's visit, unsure whether the report would actually change anything. Mr. Hasan, who was not known for giving compliments, looked up from the document and said, "Yusuf, I have to admit that I should have told you this sooner. You have been one of our most reliable team members." Yusuf was genuinely moved by the words, especially coming from someone who rarely expressed appreciation. He realized that the unexpected feedback had not only boosted his confidence but had also encouraged his supervisor to communicate more openly. Walking back to the forecourt, Yusuf felt lighter than he had in months, grateful that a stranger's observation had changed the way he saw his own work.
