    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Imani had been sitting in the barbershop for about fifteen minutes, half-reading a magazine she had already flicked through twice, when something made her look up. The shop was busy that afternoon, filled with the low hum of clippers and quiet conversation. Across the room, a man was leaning back in the barber's chair with his eyes closed, and there was something about the shape of his face that caught Imani's attention. She studied him for a moment, tilting her head slightly. The jawline, the broad forehead, the way his hands rested calmly in his lap. It was unmistakable. She was almost certain she knew him, though she struggled to place exactly where from. The man opened his eyes and glanced around the room, the way people do when they sense someone is watching them.

His gaze landed on Imani, and for a brief moment neither of them moved. Then his expression shifted from confusion to wide-eyed recognition. "Imani?" he said, sitting up straighter in the chair. "Kofi," she replied, already on her feet. "I honestly wasn't sure it was you." They had been close friends throughout secondary school, inseparable for years, yet after graduating they had drifted apart without meaning to. Life had simply carried them in different directions. Standing there in the barbershop, it felt both strange and completely natural to see each other again. While Imani waited for her turn, she and Kofi caught up on the years they had missed.

He had retrained as a teacher and had been working with primary school children for the past three years, a career change he described as the best decision he had ever made. Imani told him she had relocated to a larger city, where she was raising her two children and had recently started her own small business. By the time the barber called her name, they had exchanged numbers and made a loose plan to meet for coffee the following week. "Let's actually follow through this time," Kofi said with a grin. Imani laughed and nodded. Running into someone from your past unexpectedly, she thought, was one of life's quiet pleasures.
