    The Surprise in the Staffroom

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Chloe had always been the kind of teacher who arrived before anyone else. Every morning, she unlocked the staffroom, switched on the lights, and started the kettle before her colleagues even stepped through the door. After five years at the school, this quiet ritual had become a comfort to her. On a gray Tuesday morning, however, she trudged in feeling unusually drained, having spent most of the previous night marking a stack of student essays. She dropped her bag onto her usual chair, exhaled slowly, and reached for the kettle. The staffroom felt strangely still, which she put down to tiredness rather than anything unusual.

When she turned around, the room was no longer empty. Her colleagues were standing in a wide arc around the table, wearing broad grins and barely managing to contain their excitement. A large cake sat in the center of the table, decorated with the words "Five Years, Chloe — We're Lucky to Have You." Colorful bunting had been strung across the walls, and someone had placed a small bunch of flowers beside the cake. Chloe pressed her hand to her mouth, completely speechless. "We've been planning this for weeks," said her colleague Tom, clearly delighted that the surprise had worked. "You're always looking after everyone else, so we thought it was time someone looked after you for a change." Chloe felt her eyes fill with tears, though she was laughing at the same time.

The head teacher stepped forward and thanked Chloe warmly for her dedication, describing her as the kind of colleague who made the whole school a better place. Chloe, still overwhelmed, managed to say a few words about how much she valued the team around her. Tom cut the cake, and the staffroom filled with the kind of easy laughter that comes from people who genuinely enjoy each other's company. By the time the first lesson bell rang, Chloe had forgotten all about her tiredness and her pile of unread essays. Walking to her classroom, she realized that the best surprises are never really about the cake or the decorations. They are about feeling truly seen by the people you work alongside every day.
