    Superlative adjectives describe the extreme quality in a group. Learn to identify the highest, lowest, best, worst, and most extreme things in any category.

    What Are Superlative Adjectives?

    Short adjectives (1 syllable): add -est. Always use THE before superlatives.

    Superlatives always need 'the': ✓ 'She is the tallest in the class.' ✗ 'She is tallest in the class.' The shows we are talking about the single most extreme example.

    Superlative adjectives describe the extreme quality of one item in a group of three or more. They show that something is the highest, lowest, best, worst, or most extreme example of its category.

    Always use "the" before superlatives

    Last summer, my family visited the biggest zoo in the country.

    We saw the tallest giraffe, the most colourful parrot, and the fastest cheetah.

    Superlatives help us describe the most extreme things in a group — the biggest, the best, and the most amazing!

    How to Form Superlatives

    Learn which pattern to use based on the adjective length. Think: Short = -est, Long = most.

    Short Adjectives (1 syllable)

    tall → the tallest

    fast → the fastest

    big → the biggest

    hot → the hottest

    cold → the coldest

    Long Adjectives (2+ syllables)

    beautiful → the most beautiful

    interesting → the most interesting

    expensive → the most expensive

    important → the most important

    difficult → the most difficult

    2 Syllables Ending in -y

    happy → the happiest

    busy → the busiest

    easy → the easiest

    funny → the funniest

    pretty → the prettiest
