    Second Conditional

    What You Will Learn

The second conditional is used to talk about unreal, imaginary, or unlikely situations in the present or future. It's perfect for dreaming, giving advice, and imagining different realities.

Understand the structure: "if + past simple, would + infinitive"
Talk about unreal, imaginary, or unlikely situations
Give advice, dream about possibilities, and imagine different realities
Use the second conditional in creative thinking and hypothetical discussions

    What Is the Second Conditional?

Second conditional = If + past simple, would + base verb. Use for unreal, imaginary, or unlikely situations.

If I had more time, I would learn Japanese. If she were taller, she could be a model. If we lived closer, we'd visit more often.

    Were not was

In formal second conditional, use 'were' for ALL subjects, including I/he/she/it: 'If I were you...' 'If she were here...' 'Was' is also accepted in informal speech.

The second conditional describes unreal, imaginary, or unlikely situations in the present or future. We use it when we're talking about things that probably won't happen, but we want to imagine what would happen if they did.

    The Golden Formula

If + past simple, would + infinitive

    If clause: The unreal/imaginary condition

    Main clause: The hypothetical result

    Key Characteristics

✓ Talks about unreal or imaginary situations

✓ The situation is unlikely or impossible now

✓ Used for dreaming, wishing, giving advice

✓ Perfect for creative thinking and "what if" scenarios

    Simple Rule!

Use second conditional when you're talking about something that is unreal, imaginary, or unlikely to happen in the present or future.

Unreal: "If I were a bird, I would fly to the moon."

Imaginary: "If I had a time machine, I would visit ancient Egypt."

Unlikely: "If I won the lottery, I would buy an island."

    A World of Dreams

Tom looked out the window and started dreaming. "If I had a plane, I would fly to every country in the world," he thought.

His friend Sara smiled. "If I were a famous singer, I would perform on the biggest stages," she said.

"And if we could speak every language, we would make friends everywhere," Tom added.

Sara laughed. "If I had a magic wand, I would make all our dreams come true!"

Tom and Sara used the second conditional to imagine wonderful possibilities — things that aren't real now, but are fun to dream about!

    Important Notes

✓ The order can be reversed: "I would buy a house if I won the lottery."

✓ Use a comma when the "if clause" comes first: "If I were rich, I would travel."

✓ No comma when the "would clause" comes first: "I would travel if I were rich."

✓ With "to be", use "were" for all subjects: "If I were you", "If he were here"

✓ Can use other modal verbs instead of "would": "could," "might"

✓ Negative: "If I didn't have to work, I wouldn't get up early."

    Using "Were" for All Subjects

    Correct Usage

"If he were here, he would help." (NOT "If he was here")

"If she were taller, she would play basketball."
