This/that/these/those can be used as adjectives (before a noun: 'this book') or as pronouns (standing alone: 'This is mine'). The distance is relative to the speaker's position.
We use these words to point to things and show if they are close to us or far away.

Close = This/These, Far = That/Those. The "s" at the end means more than one.
